Exterior Wood Cladding

Facades,
not panels.

Thermally modified and charred timber for the building envelope. Specified by architects, engineered for exposure, supplied board by board across India.

Cladding is the one part of a timber scheme that lives permanently outdoors.

Rain, UV, temperature swing and seasonal humidity, on every face, every day. Specifying a facade is a different discipline from interior panelling: the question is not only how the wood looks, but how it moves, drains, ventilates and ages.

A facade that performs is a system: a dimensionally stable, decay-durable timber; a profile that sheds water and carries a ventilated cavity; fixing that allows movement; and a finish strategy matched to how you want it to age. Get those right and real wood outlasts most synthetic claddings, silvering gracefully instead of fading.

How timber performs outdoors ↓

Profile defines the facade,
not just the timber

The same board reads completely differently depending on orientation, jointing and the shadow gap between boards. This is where a facade stops looking like siding and starts looking designed.

Vertical boards

Draws the eye up, sheds water fast, reads tall and formal. The default for contemporary facades.

Horizontal boards

Grounds the building and widens it visually. Needs careful detailing so end-grain and laps stay protected.

Open shadow-gap

A deliberate reveal between boards over a dark cavity. Rhythmic, modern, ventilation-friendly.

Battens & rhythm

Applied battens add depth and a strong vertical cadence. Screens, fins, feature elevations.

How timber performs
once it is exposed

Not generic benefits. The four factors that actually decide whether a facade lasts, and how thermal modification changes them.

01Moisture & movementThermal modification permanently lowers equilibrium moisture content, so boards absorb less water and move far less: fewer cupping, cracking and movement issues on the elevation.
02Biological durabilityImproved resistance to decay. Depending on species and treatment, boards reach EN 350 Durability Class 1–2, without added chemical preservatives.
03UV & finishLeft uncoated, timber weathers to a silver-grey patina; a pigmented oil holds the warm tone for longer. Stable boards also keep coatings intact far longer. Both routes are valid.
04Detailing & maintenanceA ventilated, drained cavity, stainless fixings that allow movement, and protected end-grain decide the lifespan as much as the species. Maintenance is low, not none.

Performance characteristics of thermal modification per the International ThermoWood Association and EN 350 durability classification. Figures vary by species and treatment intensity; full data is on each material page.

Questions specifiers actually ask

Is thermally modified timber the same as ThermoWood®?
“Thermally modified timber” is the generic technical term (per CEN/TS 15679). “ThermoWood®” is a registered trademark of the International ThermoWood Association, used only by its certified members. Our boards are thermally modified timber; we describe performance in generic, standards-based terms.
Will the colour stay the same outdoors?
Left uncoated, all exterior timber gradually weathers to a silver-grey patina under UV. This is natural, not a defect. To hold the original warm tone, a pigmented exterior oil is applied and periodically refreshed. Both are valid design choices; we will advise based on your elevation and maintenance appetite.
Is charred (Yakisugi) cladding fireproof?
No. Traditional Japanese Yakisugi (charred cedar) is associated with improved fire-retardancy, decay resistance and dimensional stability, but it is not fireproof or non-combustible. We never market it as fireproof. For specific fire-rating requirements, confirm the project's compliance needs with us.
How long does an exterior timber facade last?
Service life depends on species, durability class, exposure, detailing and finish, not on one headline number. Properly detailed thermally modified timber with a ventilated cavity delivers long, low-maintenance outdoor service. We give a realistic expectation for your specific elevation rather than a generic figure.
Do you handle installation?
We are a supply business. We provide the timber, profiles, finishes and detailing guidance all-India; installation is carried out by your own contractor. We are happy to advise your installer on cavity, fixing and junction detailing.
Can thermally modified timber be used structurally?
No. Per the International ThermoWood Association, thermally modified timber is not intended for load-bearing structural use. It excels in architectural, decorative and envelope applications: cladding, screens, soffits and facades, where appearance and durability matter.
