Wooden Panelling — Species

Red Oak

Warm, reddish and wonderfully grained — the hardwood that takes a stain better than almost any other.

The warm one

Warm tone, bold grain, endlessly stainable

Red Oak glows with a warm, light-to-medium brown heartwood carrying a distinctive reddish-pink cast — paired with a bold, open grain that gives every panel real presence. It is the species that turns a wall into a feature.

Its famously open pores drink in stain and finish, so Red Oak can be dialled to almost any tone — from pale and contemporary to deep and traditional — while staying affordable and easy to work.

Why choose it

Four reasons designers pick Red Oak

01

Takes any stain

Its open pores absorb colour evenly — the most versatile species for matching an exact tone, light or dark.

02

Bold, honest grain

A strong, open grain pattern that gives walls real texture and character rather than a flat, uniform face.

03

Hard & hard-wearing

At 1,290 lbf on the Janka scale it resists knocks and daily wear — a genuine, long-lasting hardwood.

04

Great value

Widely available and well-priced for a solid hardwood — premium looks without a premium-timber cost.

Where it works

An interior favourite

  • Feature walls & headboards
  • Living rooms & bedrooms
  • Retail & hospitality interiors
  • Furniture-matched panelling
Keep it indoors

Red Oak’s open pores give it its character and its stain-friendliness — but also mean it is not naturally rot-resistant. It is at its best indoors. For exterior walls, choose White Oak or our thermally modified Thermowood.
